When we talk about Seiko watches, we associate this brand with elegance and sporty style, two peculiarities that apparently seem at odds with each other. Yet, the Japanese brand's wristwatches manage to combine these two qualities. The Seiko 5 Sports Suits Dark Black offers this mix perfectly.

Woronora Dam

Woronora Dam, located south of Sydney in the suburb of Woronora Dam, New South Wales, Australia, serves a dual purpose. It’s a vital source of water for Sydney’s southern suburbs and the Illawarra region, while also boasting a rich history and scenic surrounds.

Purpose and History:

  • Constructed between 1927 and 1941, Woronora Dam was the fifth and final dam built before World War II to secure Sydney’s water supply.
  • A mass gravity dam, it relies on its own weight for stability. The lower sections are built with massive sandstone blocks quarried on-site, showcasing impressive cyclopean masonry.
  • Today, the dam supplies water to nearby communities like Helensburgh and Engadine, as well as parts of the Sutherland Shire and the northern Wollongong region.

Capacity and Features:

  • With a total capacity of 71,790 megalitres (2,535 million cubic feet), Woronora Dam is a significant reservoir.
  • An uncontrolled serpentine spillway releases excess water downstream of the dam in times of heavy rain.
  • Two inspection galleries are located within the dam wall, allowing for maintenance and monitoring.

Management and Access:

  • Managed by WaterNSW, the dam itself is not open to the public for safety reasons.
  • However, the surrounding area offers recreational opportunities. There are picnic areas near the dam, and scenic walking tracks allow visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of the area.

Environmental Significance:

  • The dam’s construction and the creation of Lake Woronora, the reservoir it impounds, impacted the local environment. However, ongoing efforts are made to manage the water quality and ecology of the lake.
  • The surrounding bushland provides habitat for native Australian wildlife.
