What Is Short Term Accommodation (STA)?
Short Term Accommodation (STA) — sometimes called respite — is an NDIS-funded support that provides temporary accommodation and assistance for participants, typically for up to 14 consecutive days at a time. STA gives participants a break from their usual environment, and gives carers and families essential rest and relief.
STA is funded under Core Supports in your NDIS plan. It covers the cost of accommodation, meals, personal care, and agreed activities during the stay. Bridges Care Services provides STA placements across our network of properties in New South Wales and Victoria.

When Is STA Used?
Planned Respite
Carers and families need regular breaks. STA provides a safe, supported stay for participants while their usual supports take a planned break — reducing carer burnout.
Emergency Respite
When a carer is suddenly hospitalised, unavailable, or a home situation becomes unsafe — STA can be arranged at short notice as emergency accommodation.
SIL Trial
Not sure if supported living is right for you? STA lets participants trial a SIL home for a short period before committing to a permanent move — reducing anxiety and uncertainty.
Transition Support
Participants transitioning from hospital, OOHC, or other care settings can use STA as a bridge while permanent accommodation arrangements are being finalised.

STA price limits are set by the NDIS and vary based on the participant's support needs and the day of the week. All prices are inclusive of accommodation, meals, personal care, and activities.

How to Book STA with Bridges Care

Confirm plan funding
We check that STA is included in the participant's NDIS Core Supports budget and that sufficient funding is available for the requested period.
Placement matched
We identify the most suitable available Bridges Care property based on the participant's support needs, location, and preferences.
Stay confirmed
We confirm dates, introduce the participant to the property team, and coordinate any transport or transition support needed for the stay.

STA placements across our network are limited. For planned respite, we recommend contacting us at least 4 weeks in advance. For emergency respite, call us immediately on 1800 964 924 and we will do our best to find an urgent placement.

Who can access Short Term Accommodation?

How many days of STA am I funded for?

Can STA be used for emergency respite?
Yes — STA can be used for emergency or unplanned respite when a carer is suddenly unavailable. Contact Bridges Care as soon as possible so we can check availability and arrange emergency accommodation quickly.
Is STA the same as SIL?
No — STA is short-term (up to 14 days at a time, within your annual allocation). SIL (Supported Independent Living) is long-term, ongoing supported accommodation. STA can sometimes be used as a trial of SIL before committing to a permanent move.
